Potato banchan, also known as gamja jorim, is a popular Korean side dish that's simple to make and full of flavor. This savory dish features bite-sized potatoes that have been braised in a flavorful soy sauce and sugar mixture until they're tender and coated in a sweet and salty glaze. Potato banchan is the perfect addition to any Korean meal, and pairs well with rice and other banchan dishes.
In this recipe post, I'll guide you through the steps to make this delicious and comforting potato banchan at home, using ingredients that are easy to find at your local grocery store. Whether you're new to Korean cuisine or a longtime fan, this dish is sure to become a new favorite!
Wash and rinse the potatoes in water (leaving the skin!)
On a cutting board, chop the potatoes into small, bite-sized chunks
Soak the potatoes in a bowl of cold water for 10 minutes (to help them avoid sticking together when theyβre in the pan)
Drain the potatoes and drizzle some oil into a heated pan
Add the potatoes to the pan and fry them on high for 5 minutes (continuously stirring the potatoes to make sure they're evenly coated with oil)
Add the onion, oyster sauce, mirin, soysauce, honey, and sugar into the pan with the potatoes
Boil everything in the pan on medium heat until all of the liquid is completely reduced
Remove the potatoes from the heat, add in a dash of sesame oil and sesame seeds, and enjoy!
